Microsoft hat sich jetzt zur Unterstützung von Visual Basic .NET im Zusammenhang mit .NET Core/.NET 5.0 geäußert: .NET 5.0 wird zum Teil unterstützt, VB als Sprache aber nicht mehr weiterentwickelt. Ein Blogbeitrag von Microsoft lobt einerseits, dass die Sprache Visual Basic seit sehr langer Zeit stabil sei und die beträchtliche Anzahl von Programmierern, die Visual Basic verwendet, zeige, dass die Stabilität und der beschreibende Stil von Visual Basic geschätzt würden. Microsoft schreibt im Blog: Für die Zukunft planen wir nicht, Visual Basic als Sprache weiterzuentwickeln ... Zukünftige Funktionen von .NET Core, die Sprachänderungen erfordern, werden in Visual Basic möglicherweise nicht mehr unterstützt.

Das schwammige möglicherweise (may not) in der Aussage von Microsoft lässt sich vermutlich interpretieren als "es wird niemand mehr da sein, der überhaupt nur prüft, ob zukünfitige Funktionen mit VB laufen".

Microsoft has now commented on the support of Visual Basic .NET in connection with .NET Core/.NET 5.0: .NET 5.0 is partially supported, but VB as a language is no longer being developed. On the one hand, a Microsoft blog post praises that the Visual Basic language has been stable for a very long time. The significant number of programmers using Visual Basic shows that Visual Basic's stability and descriptive style are valued. Microsoft writes in the blog: We have no plans to develop Visual Basic as a language in the future... Future features of .NET Core that require language changes may no longer be supported in Visual Basic.

The vague "may not" in Microsoft's statement can presumably be interpreted as "there will no longer be anyone around to check whether future functions will run with VB".
